まず１枚目にある車の窓から見たガソリンスタンドを撮り、旅を始めた。1991年7月、ジョージア州アトランタからテネシー州メンフィスまで、ところどころ立ち寄りながら、８日をかけて細い道を運転した。ジャクソンやバーミンガムやモンゴメリーといった大きな街に着くと、パーキングメーターを使って駐車し、何ブロックか歩き回った。本を作ろうという意図はなく、ただ写真を撮ろうと思っていた。

この写真集は、いくつかの――脆い――真実に光を当て、人生の経験を赤裸々に伝えようとするものである。集積された写真、無限の反復は、自分自身の人生の限界をどこまでも押し広げていく1人の人間のものの見方を実証するものであり、それを通じて私たちは、彼が必死の覚悟で取り組んできた探求の感覚、必然性、切迫感をつかむことができる。その探求に関して、現実から抜き取られた痕跡、断片、小片はほとんど存在しない。ただいくつかの「生き残りの写真（イメージ）」があるだけなのである。
